Thousands flee as fighting erupts in Congo capital

Fighting erupted in the southern part of Congo’s capital Brazzaville on Monday, with heavy fire in opposition bastions between troops and unidentified assailants sending thousands of residents fleeing.

By late morning, AFP reporters saw streams of people panicked by the gunfire heading north away from districts loyal to the opposition, which is contesting President Denis Sassou Nguesso’s recent re-election.

The reason for the clashes was not immediately clear and no official comment was immediately available.

According to several witnesses, the crackle of automatic gunfire began after 2:00am (0100 GMT) in Makelekele and Mayana districts, and continued without stop until dawn.

Several explosions were heard and two police stations reportedly torched in the restive run-down districts, strongholds of Congo’s opposition.

“Soldiers came and told us to leave before it was too late, now we don’t know where to go,” said a 24-year-old student who gave her name as Mercie.

By 8:15am, the gunfire had become sporadic although witnesses across the Congo river in northern Kinshasa, capital of the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, also reported hearing explosions.

In mid-morning hundreds of police and troops, some in armoured vehicles, fanned out across the city’s southern areas.

Security forces threw up roadblocks on the main road between the south and the city centre, stopping all cars for checks.

– ‘Terrified’ –

“I couldn’t stand the sound of the bullets and the heavy arms, I’m terrified,” a 55-year-old called Jerome told AFP.

The clashes erupted as Congo’s Constitutional Court examines results from the March 20 presidential election won by veteran leader Denis Sassou Nguesso but denounced by five defeated candidates who have alleged “massive fraud”.

Sassou Nguesso, a former paratrooper colonel in office for 32 years, was declared winner with over 60 percent of the vote.

Last week, several southern districts observed a strike called in protest over the results in a country of biting poverty where oil riches only benefit a fraction of the population.

Congo has been on edge since an October constitutional referendum that ended a two-term limit on presidential mandates, allowing the head of state to run again.

Critics accuse the president of rampant corruption and nepotism, blasting the referendum result as a “constitutional coup”.

Former colonial power France on Monday called for “restraint” and urged French citizens to stay at home.

Sassou Nguesso served as president from 1979 to 1992 and returned to power in 1997 following a civil war.

He won two successive terms in 2002 and 2009, but both elections were contested by opposition parties.

MTN includes World Panel SunStream in new bundle

MTN South Africa on Monday launched its new promotional package featuring World Panel’s SunStream, which allows users to stream electricity from the sun directly into their mobile devices.

Mr Hennie Botha, World Panel’s Managing Director for South Africa, made the disclosure in a statement by MTN in Lagos.

According to the statement, World Panel SunStream will keep MTN customers charged in energy-strapped region.

Sunstream, the world’s most efficient and durable micro-solar panel is made by a U.S. company and instantaneously converts sunlight into electricity and delivers it to your feature phone with a 99 per cent throughput rate.

It said that MTN/SunStream bundle carried a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of about 219 South African Rand (R219) and included a SunStream and R20 free airtime on the MTN network.

It said that the promotional package was available at MTN stores in Mthatha, adding that SunStream was expected to roll out across South Africa soon.

“The SunStream was developed with exactly this customer in mind: someone who views his mobile device as a lifeline but lacks the power to keep it charged.

“The reliable, affordable power offered by the SunStream can be a game-changer, and we are therefore pleased to launch this bundle with MTN,’’ the statement said.

It added that the World Panel’s SunStream product line was introduced in the late 2015 after years in development.

It said that built to international standards; the new technology bypasses the need for chipsets or PC boards, which are notorious for breakage on typical solar charging devices.

The statement said the highly durable SunStream products would charge most feature phones at or near the same speed as a wall plug and could perform even while submerged in water.

It said that the new bundle was announced at an event in Mthatha with executives from MTN and World Panel Inc. present, with product demonstrations and branded promotion.

World Panel, Inc. is a triple-bottom line company (people, planet, profit) founded by solar expert and entrepreneur John Anderson.

Conte becomes Chelsea manager on three-year deal

Italy coach Antonio Conte was named as Chelsea’s new manager on Monday after the reigning Premier League champions announced he had signed a three-year contract that will start following Euro 2016.

“I am happy we have made the announcement now so everything is clear and we can end the speculation,” said Conte, first tipped as a successor to interim manager Guus Hiddink at Stamford Bridge last month, in a statement on Chelsea’s website.

The 46-year-old former Juventus boss took over the Italian national team in August 2014 and secured their qualification for the European Championship finals in France, which start in June.

“I will continue to focus on my job with the Italian national team and will reserve speaking about Chelsea again until after the Euros,” added Conte, who guided Juventus to three straight Serie A titles from 2012-14 before taking charge of Italy.

He added: “I am very excited about the prospect of working at Chelsea Football Club.

“I am proud to be the coach of the national team of my country and only a role as attractive as manager of Chelsea could follow that.

“I am looking forward to meeting everyone at the club and the day-to-day challenge of competing in the Premier League.

“Chelsea and English football are watched wherever you go, the fans are passionate and my ambition is to have more success to follow the victories I enjoyed in Italy.”

Chelsea have been without a permanent manager since the London club ended Jose Mourinho’s second spell at Stamford Bridge in December after they lost nine out of the first 16 games of their Premier League title defence.

Under Dutch coach Hiddink, they have mounted something of a recovery and last weekend’s 4-0 win away to bottom of the table Aston Villa left Chelsea tenth in the 20-team Premier League.

Nevertheless they will now end the season without a trophy and won’t qualify for the elite Champions League, with even a place in Europe’s second-tier Europa League now looking beyond them.

Conte becomes the fifth Italian manager of Chelsea following Gianluca Vialli, Claudio Ranieri, Carlo Ancelotti and Roberto di Matteo.

His appointment will also make him the eighth full-time Chelsea manager during Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s 13 years as owner of the Blues.

One major item in Conte’s Chelsea in-tray will be the future of veteran club captain John Terry.

The 35-year-old former England central defender, who has spent his entire senior professional career with Chelsea, announced in January he would be leaving at the end of the season only for the club to respond by saying he could yet be offered a new contract.

Several other players may have been considering their future at Chelsea, given the lack of Champions League football next term, but the fact the Blues have signed a manager with Conte’s track record could persuade them to stay put.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia, welcoming Conte’s appointment, said: “We are very pleased to have recruited one of the most highly regarded managers in world football and we are equally pleased to do so before the end of the current season. This aids our future planning.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Guus Hiddink, who has done a great job since he joined us in December.”

Neymar open to ‘dream’ PSG move – agent

Brazilian superstar Neymar could join Paris Saint Germain, if the French giants pay his huge 193 million euros ($220 million) get out clause, his agent said Monday.

Neymar has a contract with Barca until 2018,” Wayne Ribeiro told French sports daily L’Equipe.
“But the prospect of living in a city like Paris, and to play for a club like PSG is also a dream for every player.

“That’s to say if PSG showed interest in Neymar we could talk about it.”

PSG have dominated Ligue 1 since the Qatari takeover of the French capital club in 2011.

Laurent Blanc’s men wrapped up their fourth successive league title in record time in March, and face Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday.

And with talisman Zlatan Ibrahimovic, courted by some of Europe’s top clubs, in possibly his last season in France, PSG have reportedly identified Neymar as their number one target before the new season starts in August.

Ribeiro added: “A contract can also be dissolved on condition of paying the release clause. It’s huge – 193 million euros.

“But I don’t think that would be an insurmountable problem for PSG.”

Ribeiro’s comments caused a stir in Spain, with Barcelona defender Gerard Pique suggesting he could never envisage Neymar leaving the European champions.

“Neymar’s not going to leave Barca, I’m certain of that, I know him and I know he won’t be leaving,” the Spanish international told a press conference ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg with Atletico Madrid.

“We’re at Barca, nobody wants to leave here! People are thrilled to be at the club, it’s total good fortune to play for this side, in this city, with these fans.

“We have everything, what more could you want? I’m convinced that all the players will stay.”

Budget 2016: Transporters urge Buhari to prioritise Lagos-Ibadan Expressway project

Transport Unions in Lagos State on Monday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to prioritise the completion of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway rehabilitation project, following the passage of the 2016 Budget by the National Assembly.

The leadership of the Road Transport Employers’ Association (RTEAN) and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state made the pleas in interviews in Lagos.

Alhaji Musa Muhammed, the Chairman of RTEAN and his counterpart in the NURTW, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, told NAN that the project remained important and should be given appropriate attention.

According to them, the project, which was started by the former President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration, should be completed to end carnage on the highway.

Muhammed said: “It is a pity that the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is still being delayed up till this time.

“The expectation of majority of us, especially the transport workers, is that by now, that road would have been completed for the safety of commuters, transport operators and other motorists.

“But as it is now, our major prayer is to see the road completed.”

The RTEAN boss urged the Federal Government to consider the economic importance of the corridor to the country.

He said, “they (the Federal Government) should please speed up work on that corridor now that the budget has been passed by the National Assembly.”

On whether some of the nation’s highways should be tolled or not, Muhammed said, “it is a welcome development if and only if the proceeds would be used to maintained those roads.

“Formerly, tolls were there but the large chunk of the proceeds went into private pockets because of the inadequate monitoring of the fund on the part of government.

“Government should ensure that the task is committed to honest hands. Personally I will welcome a return to tolling.”

The RTEAN boss, who also urged the government to bring back road signs on highways, however, lamented the disregard of such signs and regulations by most motorists.

On his part, Agbede observed that the poor state of the highways had caused the loss of many lives.

“Many productive lives and property have been lost on our roads, while many of our members and other transport workers have also lost their means of livelihood.

“Now that the budget is passed, we expect that work should start in time on the Lagos/Ibadan expressway, to ensure its completion for the benefit of Nigerians,” the NURTW boss said.

According to him, it will go into history if the current administration completes the highway with high standard.

He said that the bad portions of the road also increased the security risks on the expressway.

Agbede, therefore, urged motorists on the road to desist from excessive speeding, overloading and dangerous overtaking on hills and bends.
The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway is a 127.6-kilometre-long expressway connecting Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State and Lagos State, the commercial centre of Nigeria. It is also the major route to the northern, southern and eastern parts of Nigeria.

The expressway is the oldest in Nigeria, commissioned in August 1978 during the Military era, under the administration of General Olusegun Obasanjo, as military Head of State.
This expressway is the busiest inter-state route in Nigeria and handles more than 250,000 vehicles daily and constitutes one of the largest road networks in Africa.

It is part of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) projects, concerned with road improvement and connectivity between the States of Nigeria.

The reconstruction of the expressway was flagged off on July 2013 by Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the Immediate-past President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to help reduce the travel time of hundreds of thousands of commuters and international air passengers.

The contract was awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria and Reynolds Construction Company Ltd at a sum of 167 billion Naira.

Two sections of the expressway will be reconstructed and this includes Section I (Lagos to the Sagamu Interchange) and Section II (the Sagamu Interchange to Ibadan).
