Chinese Facebook users criticise Mark Zuckerberg's smog jog

Chinese Facebook users are criticising a post by Mark Zuckerberg jogging through Beijing without a face mask.
"Kicked off my visit with a run through Tiananmen Square, past the Forbidden City and over to the Temple of Heaven," the Facebook founder said in a post.
The National Meteorological Centre reported that smog this week reached "dangerously high levels" in Beijing.
The Chinese capital has been plagued by recurring air pollution linked to lung damage and respiratory illnesses.
Local media reported that the air in Beijing on Friday pushed past 300 AQI on the Air Quality Index, a level deemed 'hazardous'.
At this level, most Beijing residents resort to wearing face masks.

Social media giant Facebook is banned in China. But thousands of netizens are still able to get around China's firewall by using virtual private networks.
While most replies on the post offered praise for Zuckerberg, some Chinese commentators were less supportive.
"Did you run for real?" asked Facebook user Nate Ziran Chen.
Another Facebook user Cindy Acevedo said: "Mark goes to Beijing, decides to go running. Mark doesn't wear a mask, comes back to US with lung cancer. Don't be like Mark, wear your mask."
"For someone who keeps proclaiming his love and interest in China and wants to make it big, you sure don't know anything about our country," said Ginny Koh. "For one, everyone in Beijing has to wear a mask. We don't take air pollution lightly, like you do."

Kenya escaped lion attacks elderly man in Nairobi

A lion has attacked an elderly man in Kenya's capital, Nairobi, after straying from a nearby national park.
The animal became agitated with people hooting their horns and taking selfies, a wildlife official said.
The lion has returned to the park and the 63-year-old man is in hospital, Paul Udoto, spokesman for the Kenya Wildlife Service said.
The city was put on high alert last month after several lions escaped from the park, causing panic.
A video circulating on social media appears to show the lion wandering along a busy road during morning rush hour.
Rangers are still on the streets of the city in case there are other lions around that have not been spotted, Mr Udoto added.
The park is separated by a main road from densely populated neighbourhoods, including Kibera slum, in the south of the city.
A loss of habitat for lions in the city means they are increasingly coming into conflict with human populations, putting their survival at risk, Kenyan conservationist Ali Kaka told the BBC.
"If there is no prey or there isn't enough prey in the park the animals may decide to wander out," he added.
Nairobi National Park is fenced in on the city side but is open elsewhere to allow for the annual wildlife migration.
In 2012, four cubs had to be placed in an orphanage after a similar incident led to their mother being killed.

12 African startups to watch in 2016

NORTH AFRICA

Yaoota

Egypt-based startup Yaoota operates a shopping search engine helping users compare products and prices in a variety of online stores.  Launched in July 2014 and initially self-funded, Yaoota helps shoppers navigate through the increasing number of online products in Egypt, compare prices, and shop directly from the merchant.

In October, the startup raised US$2.7 million in funding – the largest investment in an Egyptian tech startup to date – from the Abu Dhabi-based KBBO Group to aid its expansion across Africa and the Middle East; so 2016 promises to be an exciting year for the startup.

DabaDoc

Moroccan startup DabaDoc allows users to find doctors and book appointments online.

Initially launched in Morocco in 2014, the startup expanded to Algeria and Tunisia in May, listing over 2,000 doctorsacross the three countries.  In September, DabaDoc launched in Nigeria and South Africa, as part of a rapid pan-continental expansion push; and by that time featured doctors in 72 different specialties across 50 cities.

DabaDoc has already been recognised in a number of competitions. It was selected as one of 10 startups in the MENA region to participate in the Aspen Blackstone programme in Silicon Valley; and it took first place at the GIST competition in Casablanca.

EAST AFRICA

Shield Finance

Kenyan startup Shield Finance uses proprietary technology and leverages mobile money to offer underbanked employees affordable salary advances directly to their mobile phones, generating revenue on interest charged on salary advances.

The startup has been gaining acclaim recently at a number of competitions.  In June it came out on top against five other teams at the DEMO Africa pre-pitch event held in Nairobi, becoming the second startup to book its place at the main event in Lagos, Nigeria in September. In July, it was a winner in the finance category at the PIVOT East mobile startups pitching competition in Nairobi.

In August, Disrupt Africa reported Shield Finance raised an undisclosed round of funding from a local angel investor.  Nonetheless, the startup is still looking to raise a seed round of US$350,000 for equity, which will be used to hire sales staff and ramp up its technical capacity in readiness to scale.

WeFarm

Also from Kenya, social enterprise WeFarm has developed a peer-to-peer (P2P) knowledge sharing platform for small-scale farmers in rural communities, which allows farmers to ask questions via SMS shortcodes and receive answers from other registered users.

The platform is open to anyone, including experts and those wishing to do business with farmers, and is available in both English and Swahili. It is approaching 50,000 questions asked on the platform, with 60 per cent of its users active monthly.

Launched in November last year, WeFarm already has over 38,000 users, and is targeting more than 500,000 active farmers by the end of 2016.

SafeMotos

Rwandan startup SafeMotos is looking to address the country’s shocking road traffic accident statistics, particularly with regard to motorcycles – with 80 per cent of road accidents in Rwanda involving a motorbike.

SafeMotos is an Uber-esque hailing app for Rwanda’s popular motorcycle taxis.  However, there is a twist in the app’s backend, which makes the most of the vehicle telematics industry. The company installs smartphones on motorbike taxis to track drivers’ behaviour and register data, pushing bad drivers to the outskirts of the system.

The startup has raised US$85,000, and plans to hit 400 trips per day in the next couple of months.

CladLight

Kenyan startup CladLight is also using tech to improve transport safety.

CladLight’s Smart Jacket uses wearable technology to make riding a motorcycle more safe. The jacket is equipped with signal transmitters on the back of the jacket, displaying the direction in which a driver intends to turn when the bike’s indicators are used. It also has a GPS tracker, allowing owners to determine the vehicle’s location.

The startup has raised over US$40,000, and hopes to mass produce Smart Jackets for motorcycle assembly plants, insurance companies and bike retail stores.

SOUTHERN AFRICA

Giraffe

South African startup Giraffe wants to improve access to job listings for the low and medium skilled jobs market using mobile.

Jobseekers sign up to Giraffe by sending a shortcode via SMS or visiting the Giraffe website. The platform asks a series of questions, culminating in a short digital CV.

Employers log onto the platform and submit a staffing request. Giraffe’s algorithm automatically contacts all suitable candidates via SMS, and asks if they would like to interview. It then automatically schedules interviews for those who respond affirmatively, and forwards their digital CVs to the employer.

Launched in February this year, by December the startup had hit 70,000 users only 10 months after launching.

It was crowned “the best startup in South Africa” at the Seedstars World competition held in Johannesburg, with the Giraffe team to represent South Africa at the global final of Seedstars World in Switzerland in 2016.

SweepSouth

South African startup SweepSouth provides a platform that allows users to book home cleaning services online from their phone, laptop or tablet, connecting homeowners with “an experienced, reliable, vetted and insured cleaner in minutes”.

Launched in June 2014 and self-funded, the startup said it had reached an operational break-even point by September.

In May this year it raised its first funding round, led by Newtown Partners – a local seed fund established by Vinny Lingham and Llew Claasen – and also including Pule Taukobong’s AAN and Polo Leteka Radebe’s Identity Development Fund (IDF).

SweepSouth said the funding would enable it to accelerate its growth further and scale rapidly – so this startup is definitely one to keep an eye on in 2016.

Vula Mobile

South African startup Vula Mobile connects general health workers in remote areas with specialists in hospitals via a mobile app.  The startup is initially focusing on eye health.

Vula Mobile allows health workers to capture patient information, take photographs, do a basic eye test and record a brief medical history before sending it directly to a specialist. They can ask for advice over a dedicated messaging platform, and decide on the best course of care for the patient.

Initially backed by grants from the likes of the SAB Foundation, DG Murray Trust, The Innovation Hub and the Shuttleworth Foundation, Vula Mobile is currently raising its first round of investment.

The startup pitched for funding at the Sparkup! Live event in Cape Town in May, walking away with funding offers to the tune of ZAR1.1 million (US$90,000) from Ernst Hertzog, Brett Commaille from AngelHub Ventures and Vasili Sofiadellis

WEST AFRICA

meQasa

Ghanaian startup meQasa is a web and mobile based real estate platform, providing a free service which helps brokers, landlords and other real estate industry professionals conduct business efficiently online, while also simplifying the search experience for prospective tenants and buyers.

In October, meQasa hit the headlines having raised US$500,000 in funding from VC firm Frontier Digital Ventures to boost its bid to become Africa’s Zillow. With the funding, meQasa promised to ramp up the development of its mobile and web service experiences, and expand its sales and marketing outreach, so 2016 will be a busy year for them.

The startup is also a portfolio company of the MEST incubator in Ghana.

DealDey

Nigeria has been tipped to become a major force in Africa’s e-commerce sector, with 89 per cent of the country’s internet users already shopping online or expecting to do so in the future, according to recent research.

One Nigerian e-commerce startup taking the market by storm is discount online shopping platform DealDey, which earlier this year raised US$5 million from Investment AB Kinnevik, with the plan to challenge heavyweights Jumia and Konga.  The startup says it has 1.5 million subscribers.

Promising to become “the strongest e-commerce site in Africa”, DealDey has plans to scale rapidly to all of Nigeria’s major cities, then to Ghana, and across the continent.

It is also rolling out new services as a wild pace, in September launching two new platforms; PromoHub – allowing merchants to offer promotional deals that can be redeemed at the merchant’s location; and LYF, a socially-driven business listings, reviews and transactional platform, which already has 20,000 businesses listed.

GoMyWay

Nigeria’s GoMyWay is addressing traffic congestion and carbon emissions, by trying to encourage ride-sharing among drivers in Africa’s most populous country.

GoMyWay looks to connect passengers with car owners going the same route with empty seats to spare, in a bid to create a people-powered transportation network.

Having initially launched in Nigeria earlier this year, GoMyWay quickly announced plans to expand to South Africa, followed by Kenya and Ghana.

BROKE MAN STONES ATM!

WHEN THE ATM turned him down the angry man got violent.

Screaming, “Zuma, give me my money!” he picked up a big rock.

FIRST HE ATTACKED THE ONE, THEN THE OTHER OF THE TWO ATMS.

According to security guard Mbuyiseli Blou (52), there was glass everywhere after the man had thrown the huge rock.

It happened at the Nedbank and Standard Bank ATMs at the Big Daddy Liquor Store in Mabandla Road, KwaNobuhle,

outside Uitenhage, Eastern Cape in the early hours of Saturday morning.

“I saw him sitting down for a long time staring at the money machines. Then he picked up a big rock,” said Mbuyiseli.

“I thought he would sit on it. But he lifted it up with both his hands and went towards the Nedbank ATM.

“He shouted, ‘Zuma, give me my money!’ and threw the heavy rock at the ATM. Then he picked it up again and threw it

at the Standard Bank ATM.”

The guard said a group of four drunk men coming from a tavern nearly moered the man.

“They wanted to beat him up because they couldn’t draw money. I begged them not to harm him,” said Mbuyiseli.

“He was so stressed because of his zero bank balance.”

The man’s sister (44) said: “When he is drunk he always shouts at the president. He is unemployed and he wants Zuma

to pay him.”

She said he often goes to Joburg because he wants to write movie scripts, or be an actor or singer.

“He believes film producers in Joburg cheated him and are making millions out of his work.”

Sergeant Majola Nkohli told Daily Sun a case of malicious damage to property was opened and a 48-year-old man appeared

in the KwaNobuhle Magistrates Court on Monday on charges of malicious damage to property.

“He was released on R500 bail and the case was remanded to 13 April.”

Costa dropped from Spain squad with Aduriz included

The Chelsea striker has failed to make the cut due to fitness issues while Athletic Bilbao's Aritz Aduriz makes the cut

Veteran Athletic Bilbao striker Aritz Aduriz was on Friday handed his first Spain call-up in five and a half years after being named in the squad for the international friendlies against Italy and Romania.

Aduriz, whose only international cap came against Lithuania in October 2010, has been rewarded for his prolific form for Athletic this season.

He started the campaign with a hat-trick in a 4-0 Spanish Super Cup rout of Barcelona and has not looked back, netting 31 goals in 44 games in all competitions.

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said of the 35-year-old: "Aduriz deserves to be here. He has scored a lot of goals and he is a player we all like."

Chelsea's Diego Costa misses out with Del Bosque suggesting it was on fitness grounds, rather than the disciplinary issues that followed his appearance for Guus Hiddink's men at Everton at the weekend.

Costa was sent-off late on in the FA Cup quarter-final defeat but cleared of making an inflammatory gesture to the home fans as he left the pitch at half-time.

Del Bosque said: "If Diego Costa was 100 per cent fit he would have been picked. The situation the other day was not so serious - and we are not here to punish."
Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta has also been left out with his club team-mate Sergi Roberto included.

"I spoke personally with Andres. He has a bit of a muscle problem, so we thought it better for him not to come," said Del Bosque. "Sergi Roberto has played everywhere and is capable of playing different positions. But we see him as a midfielder."

European champions Spain continue their preparations for Euro 2016 by taking on Italy in Udine on March 24. They then travel to face Romania in Cluj three days later.

Spain squad to face Italy and Romania:

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Porto), David De Gea (Manchester United), Sergio Rico (Sevilla).

Defenders: Juanfran (Atletico Madrid), Mario Gaspar (Villarreal), Gerard Pique (Barcelona), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Marc Bartra (Barcelona), Nacho (Real Madrid), Jordi Alba (Barcelona), Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea).

Midfielders: Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Mikel San Jose (Athletic Bilbao), Sergi Roberto (Barcelona), Koke (Atletico Madrid), Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea), Thiago (Bayern Munich), Isco (Real Madrid), Nolito (Celta Vigo), Pedro (Chelsea), Juan Mata (Manchester United), David Silva (Manchester City).

Forwards: Aritz Aduriz (Athletic Bilbao), Alvaro Morata (Juventus), Paco Alcacer (Valencia).

Men should stop acting as if they could get away with AIDS

SINCE I came back from the UK  a couple of years ago, I have had dates with a string of successful, charming, university educated men from lawyers to bankers and showbiz men and, no matter how serious the relationship became, not one of them ever mentioned safe sex or used a condom without my insistence”, said Nina, in her late 20s and a fairly successful IT expert. “Which begs the question: in a city where unbridled hedonism is becoming the norm, what has happened to the AIDS conversation? There is a lack of awareness among young people, and the belief that ‘this won’t happen to me’. And saying STDs are something only dirty people get is unfortunately, a typical view which is scary, considering the sexual health record the country has.

“To get a glimpse into the Nigerian male’s head-in-the-sand attitude, I recently met a good banker friend in his 30s for drinks at his elitist club. Though he is successful and well educated, I found his views on safe sex alarming. According to him, If you move in the right circle, that type of thing just doesn’t happen. I don’t go out to sleazy beer parlours. I go to members’ clubs like the one I’ve invited you to, where you know two things about the members you meet: that the membership committee has approved them, and that they can afford to spend over a quarter of a million naira or more to belong. Otherwise, I tend to meet people at friend’s parties, so it’s not as if I’m picking up women in a randomly chosen bar’.

“Nigerian men also seem to associate condoms with illicit affairs more suitable to a one-night-stand than a proper girl-friend. “If a man carries condoms in his wallet here, women think: he’s obviously after a one- night-stand and does it a lot”, said one of the men I talked with. By that logic, not having the STD discussion implies a sense of trust and therefore greater intimacy. Unfortunately, the illusion of romance ends when the painful symptoms begin. One of my friends, a 32-year-old investments banker with a boyfriend who adores her, found out the hard way recently when he confronted her about the pain he was suddenly suffering. He had met her at an out-of-the-way fast food joint and said, ‘I have a sexually transmitted disease, and it can only have come from you since I haven’t slept with anyone else’. He hadn’t even been tested to confirm his suspicion but basically, he suggested that my friend was the whore of Babylon.

Meanwhile, her boyfriend became incommunicado—apparently he found declaring undying love less daunting than talking about his problem. It was several days before he was able to discuss the subject, by which time my friend turned out to have nothing nastier than trust!” Ask the average Nigerian man: have you ever been tested for STDs? And he would want to know why he would do that since he ‘d never had anything wrong with his sexual life all his life.

“I’ve pointed out gently to quite a few that many infections such as chlamydia (the most common and easily spread) can show no symptom for months or even years. I also realise that not only were Nigerian men completely unaware of the symptoms of chlamydia and gonorrhoea, but some of them never even believe  they could ever get them!

“Our men obviously have a very prudent attitude towards sex that is riddled with hypocrisy. They all have often been bombarded with explicit imagery, yet fail to have open discussions about the basic facts of life or talk to the children about sex. We’ve got to discard our belief that safe sex and romance are mutually exclusive”.

Court remands Ikorodu kidnap suspects in prison custody

Magistrate Mrs I. O. Adelaja of an Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrate’s Court, sitting at Oyingbo, on Friday, remanded the six suspects who allegedly kidnapped three pupils of Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary School in prison.

The six kidnappers that were remanded are: Emmanuel Arigidi, 37: Gift Pius, 30: Omoni Rufus Fred, 32: Owei Omobo Geofrey, 38: Akanji Seun, 38: and James Henry Segun, 29.
Magistrate Adeleja ordered their remand, following a remand application filed and argued by the lawyer to the Police, Mr. Godwin Osuyi.

Osuyi, while arguing the remand application said the application was brought in pursuant to section 264(1) and (2), of the administration of Criminal Justice of Lagos State, 2011.

He further informed the Court that the remand application was to enable the Directorate of Public Prosecution, DPP, to issue an advice on the matter.

He therefore urged the court to remand the suspects for the first 30 days, pending when the advice will be issued by the DPP.

However, the six suspects who were represented by Mr. Ola Ogunbiyi did not oppose the application.
