Why not use the same common sense when fishing for people?"

AFCON 2017 Qualifiers: NFF books Egypt Airliner for Nigeria-Egypt second leg

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said the Super Eagles would depart the country aboard an Egypt Airliner for the second leg of the AFCON 2017 qualifier against Egypt on March 26.

The President of NFF, Amaju Pinnick, who said this in a chat with newsmen in Abuja on Thursday, explained that the present economic situation had made it difficult for the team to travel to Egypt by chartered flight.

Pinnick said that travelling by a regular Egypt airliner would help the football house save about N40 million, which could be used to pay part of the players’ match bonuses and allowances.

“We looked at various options; we have Arik as our partner but Arik as a company is going through a tough time; tough time in the sense that everything they are doing is in foreign currency.

“So, even if they say that they are going to take 250, 000 dollars to fly the team there, how much is it in naira? Over N60 million.

“It was initially 290,000 dollars but they came down because they have to pay landing and parking charges in Alexandria and we looked at the other option that Egypt Air has three flights from Nigeria every day.

“They have from Kano, Abuja and Lagos; we are going to be saving a minimum of 35 to N40 million and if you can save that why don’t you do a regular Egypt Air that leaves Abuja 11. 30 and gets to Cairo that Saturday.

“Cairo to Alexandria is twenty minutes by air and one hour by road because indeed they (players) might not even train that Saturday, then, on Sunday/Monday they will train and by Tuesday evening they play the game.

“So, people should be able to see why we are doing this not because of anything but looking at cost and other operational activation; it’s going to save us minimum N30 million.

“So, it’s a 100, 000 dollars which of course can pay players some of their bonuses.

“So we are looking at the economics of scale.’’

According to the NFF boss, preparation for the first leg encounter between Nigeria and Egypt in Kaduna on March 25 has reached an advanced stage as the invited foreign-based players have assured him of victory.

Pinnick stated that the players have resolved to do their best possible, including spend their own resources, to ensure that they pick the AFCON 2017 ticket at the expense of Egypt.

“In terms of preparation, its 100 per cent and the foreign-based players take this match as their fight because of their passion.

“They called me to tell me that they will mark the Egyptians out of position.

“It excites me when the players say this.’’

Pinnick told the players not to worry about the weather condition in Kaduna as they will acclimatise before the encounter.

There had been complaints by some of the players that Kaduna would be hot for them during the encounter.

Pinnick said: “Most of these players were born here and they grew up here too.

“It is natural that once you travel outside the country for three months, once you get into the country your body regulates.

“However, we have communicated our time and programme to CAF; so, we cannot at this point begin to change our programme and venue because the Egyptians will see it that we are jittery.

“The players will adapt by the time they arrive the country and that was the essence of inviting home-based players who can fill in the gap in case there are lapses.

The NFF president urged Nigerians, especially the media, to support the team and to focus on the positive side of its activities in their news reports to ensure that the country qualifies for the tournament ahead of Egypt.

He said the current economic recession had made it impossible for the NFF to live up to its financial duties especially as it regards the payment of the coaches’ salaries and players allowances and bonuses.

Pinnick noted that the football house was on the verge of offsetting the Eagles match bonuses incurred during the AFCON qualifying match against Swaziland and that of the CHAN Eagles which were incurred in Rwanda.

Falconets draw Canada, Japan, Spain

Nigeria’s Under-20 women’s national team will face Canada, Japan and Spain at the Fifa Under-20 Women’s World Cup, which starts in Papua New Guinea in November.

The Canadians and Nigerians are clearly the experienced sides in Group B of the tournament with Japan and Spain bringing up the rear.

Though tied on seven appearances apiece at the Under-20 Women’s World Cup, Nigeria’s Falconets are favourites to finish top of their group having played in the last four in the last three editions, including finish second on two occasions.

Nigeria will start their outing at the Under-20 Women’s World Cup against Japan at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby on November before facing Canada in their second match three days later.

The Falconets round off their quest to finish among the top-two in their group at the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium, Port Moresby, against Spain on November 20.

Messi floors Ronaldo again

Nissan have teamed up with Loughborough University to find out what makes football so exciting for fans
British men find watching Lionel Messi more exciting than any other players in the Uefa Champions League, according to a survey by Nissan as part of their Excitement Index.

64% of Brits stated they found Messi exciting to watch with Barcelona team-mate Luis Suarez (47%) coming second and Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo (25%) coming third.

British fans are also looking forward to Leicester City’s imminent debut season in next season’s Uefa Champions League.

22% of Brits claimed they find Leicester exciting to watch, ranking them above the last two season’s beaten finalists, Atletico Madrid and Juventus!

Moving away from the pitch slightly, British men get more excited about watching football than having sex.

56% of men in Britain stated watching their favourite team provides them with more excitement than getting intimate with their loved ones.

When asked to rate the two aspects of their lives they found most exciting, nearly one in three (30%) chose their football club, compared to less than one in five (16%) who chose their job.

Nigerian youths are agents of change, says Aisha Buhari

The Wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, has commended Nigerian youths for being agents of change in the life of the present administration.

Buhari gave the commendation on Thursday in Abuja at the public presentation of a book titled: “The New Dawn Nigeria”, written by a group of youths under the canopy of Flex Digest Concept, a print media organisation.

The book was in honour of the change mantra of President Muhammudu Buhari.

Representing the wife of the President, Mrs Pauline Tallen, a former Deputy Governor of Plateau State, called on the youths to take their education seriously as it is their passport to the future.

“She therefore, commends the authors of this book and she prays that all of us join hands together as true change agents to help Mr President succeed in the vision for a new Nigeria.

“Mr. President is not a magician, he cannot change Nigeria alone. Mr President and his ministers are not magicians but each one of us must participate in making this change possible.

“How can we make this change possible by doing the right thing at the right time, by having the fear of God in all that we do.

“As mother of the nation she called on youths to take their studies very seriously because education is the greatest assets and passport any parent or any society can give its citizens.

“ We should therefore prepare for tomorrow by doing the right things and by making sure we fight the ills in our society.’’

Buhari also commended the NYSC members for obeying the call to serve their county as part of their contribution to national development.

‘’Through your service to this nation, you will acclimatize yourselves with what is happening in various parts of the country.’’

In his remarks the Project Coordinator, Flex Digest, Mr Kangamma Uregati, said that the change mantra of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration inspired her to write the book.

“What actually brought about this book is our belief in the change mantra of President Muhammad Buhari.

“We actually believe that he is the man, who has come to transform this nation and we have been trying to put this in place since he assumed office.

“We are convinced beyond reasonable doubt that with Buhari there will be transformation in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“This book focuses on the new dawn in Nigeria; it portrays the coming of transformation; so, it is good morning to Nigeria.’’

While reviewing the book, Mr Gbenga Onaiyiga of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, said that the book had identified President Buhari as the proponent of the new dawn in Nigeria.

“The question in the book is, who takes Nigeria to the promised land? and the authors believe that President Buhari has the capacity to take our great country to the promised land.’’

Onaiyiga said the book was a good attempt by the authors at identifying with the wind of change blowing over the country.

In his message of goodwill, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said that the nation’s leadership was in the hands of the youths.

He, therefore, urged them to feel encouraged by the development.

He said, “My message to the youths of this country is that this is their time and you all should assume you role as leaders of tomorrow.’’

The minister, who was represented by Mr Jimoh Lawal, a Director in the ministry, said that the youths had produced a book in which they presented their view on the struggle to deliver Nigeria out of political crisis.

15 feared dead as Fulani herdsmen attack another Benue community

MAKURDI – The incursion of suspected Fulani herdsmen into parts of Benue state took a worrisome dimension Thursday afternoon when the invaders stormed Tombo in Buruku local government area of the state, killing no fewer than 15 persons.

Vanguard learned that the marauders who razed part of the community also took over the deserted villages.

According to a source who spoke to Vanguard on phone from the besieged community, “as I speak with you the people are shooting sporadically and the villagers are fleeing for fear of being killed.

“The situation in Tombo at the moment is scarery and we are helpless, it’s as if we are in a war situation where the mission of the invaders is to occupy and tske over our villages.

“It’s a pathetic situation because corpses are littering the community though one cannot give a specific number of the dead which should not be less than 15 but I know that the casualty figure could be huge because many have been wounded as bullets continue to fly around.

“The people are also burning down houses, farms and food stuff as they move into the villages in what looked like a well coordinated attack.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Assistant Superintendent, ASP, Moses Yamu who confirmed that seven persons had been killed said the incident occurred at about 3pm Thursday.

Yamu disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Paul Yakadi had led a team to the crisis zone to ascertain the cause of the renewed clash in order to compel the feuding parties to cease hostilities..
that the attack on Buruku is coming on the heels of the recent attacks on Agatu and Logo lo local government areas of the state where hundreds of lives have been lost to the incursion of the herdsmen.

Why I do love songs – Simi

Fast rising singer and songwriter, Simisola Bolatito Ogunleye, popularly known as Simi wrote her very first tune at the age of 10 and started singing and dancing in her early teens as a member of the teenage church choir. The songstress whose songs include ‘Jamb Question’ and ‘Open and Close’, recently dropped yet another hit single titled ‘ Love don’t care’ In this interview, the award winning graduate of Mass communication who is signed to X3M music talks about her musical journey, plans for the year and life generally. Excerpts….
How have you fared since you delved into the Nigerian music scene?

It has been fabulous so far. Although the journey has not been easy but with persistence for the career I have a passion for, it has improved. This year 2016, February precisely, I released a single, ‘Love don’t care’ which has made the top ten in the Nigerian music chart for a couple of weeks now and is currently enjoying massive airplay on radio. I have also shot the video for the single ‘Soldier’ with Falz which is expected to be out soon. With all these, I can say my career is very promising.

Most of the songs you recently put out have a touch a humor in them, is it a kind of niche you are trying to carve for yourself?

Yes, I think it’s something people are beginning to notice in my music, there is usually a touch of humor in it. Some of my songs are also serious business without a pinch of humor in them. But you’ll realise that my songs which are laced with humor are actually realistic.

Do you write your songs and how are you able to put the lyrics together?

Of course, I write my lyrics myself and for other people, don’t forget that I am not just a singer, but equally a song writer and I mix and master most of my songs myself. My songs have to do with how I feel. If it is a realistic song, it will make you think deep. For instance, Jamb question is not really a deep song but the most important thing about it is that people picked my message in it.. How deep I go is dependent on what I am trying to say. If I sing a song on heartbreak, and if it is personal, I might probably go too deep.  But my songs are inspired by people’s experience in life and what I see around me. Most of my songs may not necessarily be attached to my personal experience. I just write songs to inspire others.

Describe yourself?

I am a very straight forward person, I like to say things the way I see them, I don’t like beating about the bush. I am not pretentious but a simple and realistic person. One thing I dislike most is pretense and I don’t like people who pretend.

So what keeps you going?

I have an amazing team. There is really little I can do myself like I can write my songs, mix and master them, but there is an engine that makes it work better and that is my management team. They make sure at all times, I’m on the right path. I have always said that I am very favored because God loves me so much and put a little extra time in molding me into what I have become today.

How much difference can you tell about the Simi then and now that are on the X3M music label?

A lot has changed because, before I was signed on X3M label, most people didn’t know me and my songs. But now that I have one of the best management team, they take on all my stress and make things happen for me easily. Now I am more calculated and focused to know that the entertainment industry is truly a busy one that comes with lots of work to carry on.

Does your management team in anyway influence the choice of song your write?

Not at all, I don’t know how it is done in other labels but here, I am at liberty to write my songs at any time and inscribe my own title to it.

What will you say your label is doing differently from other record labels?

In all fairness, I don’t know what they do in other record labels but all I can say is that my label has always got my back at all times. Most times I get a no for some suggestions I make and that is the more reason I love my team; I love people who can say no to me and not necessarily giving me a yes to please me. Take for instance, before we released Jamb question, I was going to drop Open and Close but my management team disagreed on that and that made me feel real bad. But at the end of the day when Jamb Question was released before Open and Close, I realized it was a great decision.

Will you say you are currently enjoying your celebrity status?

Well this is the real me. I can still stop by and buy roasted plantain by the road side. I don’t feel uncomfortable, I am not blown away by fame because that is not what excites me in the game, what excites me is the music. I am happy about my celebrity status only because more people know my music and want to relate with it.

Describe your genre of music?

My kind of music is Afro Pop/RNB but mostly Afro-soul

If you are to do a song about yourself, what will the title be and why?

I think it will be All Love because I feel like when other people are happy, I am equally happy. This life is too short and we need to smile and be happy. I also know that the root of happiness is love which can be spread to loved ones.

When should your fans be expecting your album?

Definitely this year, as all hands are currently on deck towards the successful outcome of the album. I won’t be disclosing the number of tracks and title for now, as we are still working on that but my fans should rest assured that the album will drop this year all things being equal.

What keeps you going?

My passion – because the only reason why I am doing music is because my attention span can be very short but one thing that keeps me more focused is music. Music is that one thing I really want to learn about and the passion I have for the art of music pushes me on and keeps me going.

As a graduate of Mass Communication, do you see yourself going into the media and writing?

I actually have a blog, although I have not been very loyal to it. I love writing, if I wasn’t into music full-time, I would probably be either a writer or an O.A.P. Writing is a part of me.

What was growing up like?

Growing up I was kind of a tom boy (laughing) because I had 3 elder brothers and from my mum, I was the only girl and last born. So I used to like snickers, baggy jeans etc. My dad spoilt my brothers and I. And we watched movies a lot, but my brothers preferred horror movies and so we all watched it together. But it was fun. When I was 9 years, my parents separated and so that was really a tough time for us, because we had to grow up faster. We came through it and we are okay.

Why does your songs revolve around love?

It is because love sells. When you talk about love, it encompasses so many things. Not women or sex alone, but issues that are love related that could keep you happy. I can’t see myself doing a song that is too political or not love related. It’s always good to carve a niche and spread it to other related issues without deviating.

Having started musically from a church background, should we hope to see you go into gospel music someday?

No, I can do a Christian song as the inspiration leads me but would not see myself as a gospel artiste.

How do you unwind?

I love swimming. Though, I never feel comfortable with bikinis. At the beach, modest dressing without too much flaunting could go for me. But at the swimming pool where everyone is in a swimsuit, it makes no difference so long as no one is offended with what every other person is wearing.

How do you feel when you hear negative stories about you?

I don’t know because I haven’t had any. If it happens, I will respond positively. If the story is not true I will keep mute and just let people assume. The truth is I don’t waste my energy thinking about negative stories.

Do you feel threatened by the number of talented female artistes in the industry and how do you intend to balance up?

I don’t feel threatened by anybody, not because I don’t think they are good, it’s just that there is enough room for anybody to shine. I am not trying to compete, so whenever I see someone trying to do amazing things, I wish them the best. And I’m even happy that we have more females that are standing out in the industry.

Let’s talk about your style, are you a designer freak?

Not really but if you give me a designer outfit, be sure I will rock them well but I am not into designers. I love our local fabrics and designs.

What is your most annoying daily routine?

That will be taking my bath. It’s not that I don’t like bathing but I love to multi-task. At times I might be brushing my teeth while also operating my system or reading. But when you get into the bathroom, you just can’t do any other thing.

What will you not be cut dead wearing?

I think that will be the full Iro and Buba. Maybe when I am getting married, I will probably wear one but for now, I won’t. I could remember the last time my mum made one for me, I really looked ridiculous in it.

Is Simi in a relationship?

Yes

Does he support your musical career?

Of course, he is my number fan. He gives me adequate support at all time.

“My husband’s girlfriend took my pant, bra from our home,’’ wife tells court

A 39-year-old food vendor, Adejoke Omotosho, on Thursday told an Igando Customary in Lagos State that her husband’s girlfriend stole her underwear from their matrimonial home.

Adejoke, the petitioner, also told the court that her husband, Musiliu Omotosho, was in the habit of bringing his lovers to their one-room apartment.

The couple is blessed with four children.

The petitioner sought for divorce of the union on the grounds of lack of care and infidelity.

She said that she was the one responsible for the education of their children.

“This is the fifth time that he will bring women into our house; on four occasions I had reported him to our families.

“Most times in the past, they begged me to forgive him because of our children, which I did.

“On this faithful day, my neighbours told me that I had a visitor, but I didn’t understand what they meant, only for me to catch my husband again with another woman in our room.

“I told them that if they were not satisfied with the rounds of sex they had, they should go for more rounds,’’ she said.

The petitioner said that she had run out of patience and wanted the dissolution of her marriage to Musiliu.

“I am running out of patience, I had kept my cool all this while, but I felt I don’t need him again, he has disrespected me enough.

“I discovered after the lady had left our house that she went away with my bra and pants. I allowed her to go with my underwear because I cannot fight over a shameless husband.

“I have checked our lives and I realise that I’m better off without him; I pay our children’s school fees.

“ I feed the family and pay the house rent since he had stopped paying. He is of no use to me,’’ Adejoke said.

The petitioner said that she was scared of contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STD) from her husband due to his unfaithfulness.

“I don’t want to contract any sexually transmitted diseases from him, my children still need me.

“ I will be of no use to them if I have HIV or other diseases; I want this marriage dissolved so that I can start my life all over,’’ she said.

Adejoke also alleged that her husband was fond of intimidating her sales girls.

“He goes to my shop and harasses my sales girls to give him money from the proceeds of my sales.

“There was a day he went to my shop and broke the door, because I took my keys away from where he could have had access to them.

“ I don’t know how I ended up marrying him,’’ she said.

Musiliu in his response denied all the allegations.

“ I usually give her N500 per day, a claim Adejoke denied. I pay my bills, but she also assists me as any good wife will do.

“Please, help me beg her because I still love her,’’ he pleaded with the court.

Musiliu added, “Iya Idaya, the woman my wife said I’m dating is a supplier on our site where I am a bricklayer.

“We were not having sex as my wife claimed, there is nothing between us,’’ he said.

The Court President, Adegboyega Omilola, ordered Musiliu to tell his alleged lover to return Adejoke’s underwear.

The president ordered both Musiliu and Adejoke to come along with three members of their respective families for an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) on April 17 when the case would come up.

Mile 12 market re-opens

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode  of Lagos State, Thursday, approved the immediate re-opening of Mile 12 Market which was shut following a violent clash which led to loss of lives and property.
The Governor, in a statement by the State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, said the decision to re-open the market followed satisfactory meeting and agreement reached with all the stakeholders involved in the operation of the Mile 12 Market.
Ayorinde added that the re-opening was also as a result of the outcome of the stakeholders meeting held between the Market Men/Women, traditional leaders in the Agiliti and Maidan communities, residents and Community Development Association (CDA).

The Commissioner said as part of measures aimed at bringing sanity into the market, the government and the market leaders have agreed that henceforth, all activities relating to the market shall be confined within the market area, and that street trading would no longer be allowed in the area.

The Commissioner added that it was further agreed trading activities in the market would henceforth be carried out in a clean and hygienic environment.

According to Ayorinde, other major agreements arrived with a consensus amongst the various stakeholders include: “Relocation of the Market to another suitable location as the existing market can no longer contain the traders; ban on the use of Commercial Motorcycles (Okada Riders) in the area; peaceful co-existence amongst all ethnic groups in the Market and environs; and removal of all shanties and illegal attachments/structures within the Market area.”

Ayorinde further said that the stakeholders agreed that it is only in an atmosphere of peace and co-existence that their various business and trade can thrive.

He assured that Lagos is a home for all, and the State Government will continue to provide the enabling environment for every investor to thrive, as the promise of the Governor to run a 24/7 economy is sacrosanct.

Governor Ambode had shut the market on March 3, 2016, after a clash between residents and Okada operators in the Mile 12 area.

Economy: We must produce our food locally – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that Nigeria must halt the importation of food items that could be locally produced.

He stated that continued importation of food would affect the economy and expose the country to industrial risks.

To realize the objective, the president said that his administration would vigorously implement policies that will revive Nigeria’s agricultural sector and reposition it as the mainstay of the national economy.

The president spoke while granting audience to the new Bulgarian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Vesselin Blagoer Delcher and others who were in at the presidential Villa on Thursday to show their Letters of Credence to him.

The President also noted that importation of food contributed to the depletion of the country’s foreign reserves and deprived citizens of job opportunities.

‘‘We must produce what we eat. We don’t have unlimited resources to continue the importation of food items that can be produced locally.

“Fortunately, some Nigerians have shown foresight by building factories that process agricultural products within the country.

‘‘They have created a value chain that boosts employment, protects our foreign reserves and safeguards the economy from external shocks.

“We will do all that we can to encourage others to join in the effort to achieve national self-sufficiency in food production,” President Buhari said.

The President said that his administration would encourage Nigerian farmers to adopt modern, technology-driven methods that guarantee higher production and returns on investment.

A statement by the presidential spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina added that President Buhari also received Mr. Paul Lehmann, the new High Commissioner of Australia, Hajiya Afsatu Olayinka Ebiso-Kabba, the new High Commissioner of Sierra-Leone and Thordur Aegir Oskarsson, the new Ambassador of Iceland.

According to the statement, the president stated hat Nigeria would welcome the further strengthening of relations with their countries, especially in the areas of agriculture, solid minerals and trade.

The President also wished the four envoys successful tenures in Nigeria.

Do You Know These 12 Reasons to Love Bananas?

Most of us know bananas are rich in potassium, packed with vitamins, and high in flavor. However, there are plenty of other unexpected reasons to love this popular fruit. Here are 12 of them. Did you know:

1. Bananas Assist With Weight Loss?

Bananas are a nutritious snack option at about 100 calories a serving. But, they’ve got much more than that going for them. The average banana contains three grams of fiber, much more than the 0.9 grams in a plum and the 0.6 grams in a cup of sliced watermelon. With all that fiber, bananas will help you feel full and keep cravings at bay.
Chicago’s Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation found you don’t even need to eat one to get the effect. Just sniff a banana when you’re hungry and you can fool your brain into thinking you’ve already eaten one.

2. Bananas Ease Hangovers?

The high levels of potassium in bananas aren’t just useful for aiding organ, tissue, and cell function. This element is one of the valuable electrolytes your body loses on a night of night drinking. Bananas also improve bowel function, so they’ll sort out a hangover-induced upset stomach.

3. Bananas Are Brain Food?
Bananas release energy slowly, so they help the brain stay alert for longer. The high potassium levels also energize the brain, which makes us more alert and receptive to learning, while the magnesium improves focus. Various studies show students improve their exam grades when they eat bananas throughout the day.
You shouldn’t stop chowing down when you graduate though. The Linus Pauling Institute found that the high levels of Vitamin B6 help prevent memory loss in old age.

4. Bananas Give You Energy?

Jamaican Olympic sprinter Yohan Blake reportedly eats 16 bananas a day. Champion tennis players Roger Federer, Novac Djokovic, and Maria Sharapova have also been snapped munching on bananas courtside. So why do so many athletes reach for this superfood ?

It seems they know bananas give you energy, the right way. Every banana contains three different kinds of sugar. Glucose and fructose are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, so they’ll give you an energy boost fast. Sucrose acts more slowly, so it keeps your blood sugar level stable and ensures you don’t suffer the crash that comes with other sweet treats like candy and soda.

Studies back up the science too. The Appalachian State University Human Performance Lab recently found that eating half a banana every 15 minutes during a cycling time trial test aided performance just as much as drinking a sports energy drink at the same intervals.

5. Bananas Boost Libido?
A banana’s sexy shape is your first clue of its natural aphrodisiac properties. Its potassium and B vitamins are essential to sexual hormone production, so eating bananas is a great way to give your libido a lift. No wonder Indians offer bananas to their fertility gods and Islamists call the banana a forbidden fruit!

6. Bananas Can Treat Stomach Ulcers?

Traditional Ayurvedic doctors in India have known of the healing power of dried green banana powder for generations. Recently British research confirmed that the powder contains sitoindosides, an element which increases mucus in the digestive tract. This creates a protective coating which prevents and heals peptic ulcers. Dried green banana pills are available, although eating whole bananas and banana chips are also likely to have some benefits.

7. Bananas are a Natural Heart Burn Remedy?
Almost 40 percent of Americans struggle with the symptoms of heartburn at least once a month. When this health hazard hits, don’t reach for an antacid. Eating a banana is a chemical-free solution to this common complaint.
The extra mucus that prevents and heals peptic ulcers will also protect your stomach from too much acid. The high potassium level in a ripe banana will also reduce the stomach’s natural acidity. Its fiber then speeds up digestion, which reduces the amount of acid the stomach needs to produce.

8. Bananas Lower Blood Pressure?

If your blood pressure’s on the high side, make sure bananas are in your shopping cart. A local study found that eating five bananas daily was half as effective as taking prescription medication for hypertension. This research was supported by an Indian study which found eating just two bananas a day reduces blood pressure by 10 percent in as little as a week. Bananas are low in sodium and high in potassium, so they’re perfect for 67 million Americans suffering the condition.

9. Bananas Help You Quit Smoking?
Why spend money on nicotine patches when there’s a much more nutritious solution? The combination of potassium, magnesium, and vitamins B6 and B12 is a potent mix which fights the effects of nicotine withdrawal. When you feel the urge to suck on a cigarette, just stick a banana in your mouth instead.

10. Bananas Ward Off Neurological Disorders?

Bananas are rich in magnesium, a substance which the body uses to convert dietary fatty acids into a substance in the brain cells called DHA. Researchers have found a link between DHA deficiency and a host of neurological disorders including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and Alzheimer’s disease.
Similarly in 2010, Japanese researchers also found people with diets lacking in vitamin B6 were at greater risk of Parkinson’s disease. This vitamin is known to prevent potential dangerous levels of the amino acid homocysteine in the brain. Preventing all these neurological disorders could be as simple as eating more bananas.

11. Bananas Make You Happy?
Bananas contain tryptophan, a substance which the body converts into the feel-good hormone serotonin. No matter who you are, you’ll enjoy the calming effects and positive vibes this natural mood booster brings.
But it’s especially important for folks suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder and depression, as these conditions are caused by a drop in natural serotonin levels. The National Association of Mental Health discovered people with depression felt better after eating a banana. With chemical antidepressants taking six to eight weeks to kick in, perhaps sufferers would be better off reaching for a quick banana fix!

12. Banana Peels Also Have Benefits?

Banana peels can do much more than offering comic relief in slapstick films. Rub the inside of the banana peel over a mosquito bite to soothe the itch. The inside of a banana peel can also heal planter warts. If you’re free of such health complaints, it’s still worth keeping your peels out of landfill. Instead bury them in your garden; they make a great natural fertilizer.

With all those advantages, why not peel yourself a banana today?

Robben out of Netherlands squad

Netherlands will have to get by without the services of Arjen Robben when it takes on France and England this month.

Bayern Munich attacker Arjen Robben has withdrawn from the Netherlands squad for the upcoming friendlies against France and England because of a thigh injury.

The 32-year-old had already sat out Bayern's 5-0 Bundesliga win over Werder Bremen over the weekend and Wednesday's 4-2 Champions League victory versus Juventus.

It is unclear how long Robben will be out of action, but the former Real Madrid winger has decided to pull out of the national squad as a precautionary measure.

Robben has won 88 caps for Netherlands since making his debut in April 2003, scoring 30 goals in the process.

The Bayern attacker was one of 28 names to have made national team coach Danny Blind's provisional squad, with the Netherlands boss set to announce his final squad Friday.

The Netherlands hosts France on March 25 before taking on England four days later.

Dani Alves: Barcelona will miss me when I am gone

The Brazilian admits he is frustrated with speculation linking him with a move away from Spain, despite recently revealing he holds an interest in one day playing in England.

Dani Alves has voiced his frustration with the ongoing speculation linking him with a move away from Barcelona and has insisted the club will miss him when he's gone.

The 32-year-old's existing contract with the Catalans runs until June 2017, but his recent comments that he would like to play in the Premier League at some stage have fueled talk that he could leave Camp Nou at the end of this season.

Nevertheless, the defender is not thinking about a transfer and is happy to stay put as long as Barcelona still wants him.

"The transfer rumors are annoying me. I have been listening to the same story that I am leaving in the summer for the past nine years," Alves told reporters.

"They are always talking about me. They never say anything about [Lionel] Messi, [Luis] Suarez or Neymar. They have to stir the market and create controversy in order to sell papers. But I am used to it and I just have to keep on doing what I do.
I will stay at the club for as long as they want me and as long as I want to be here. We are just small pieces of the puzzle and the club decides what's best for the club. We have to respect that.

"But what I can tell you is that they will miss me once I am gone."

The right back has made 37 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona in 2015-16, scoring once.

Paul Daniels: TV magician dies after brain tumour diagnosis

He was at his Berkshire home with wife Debbie McGee when he died in the early hours of Thursday.
"Debbie and the family would like to thank everyone for their support and asks that their privacy be respected at this sad time," his publicist said.
He fronted BBC's Paul Daniels Magic Show for 15 years and became one of the biggest stars on British TV.

Daniels was born Newton Edward Daniels in Middlesbrough and developed his magic skills in working men's clubs, making his TV debut on talent series Opportunity Knocks.
He then took over the primetime Saturday night slot with his BBC show, which started in 1979. Daniels was known for a string of catchphrases, including the line: "You'll like this... not a lot, but you'll like it."
BBC correspondent Nick Higham said: "Paul Daniels could be chippy and some thought him smug. He fell out with BBC managers who dropped his show in the 1990s.
"But there was no doubting his popularity - or his talent."

He had recently returned from hospital to his Berkshire home, having been diagnosed in February. It was initially suspected he had suffered a stroke after he fell at home, but it was then discovered he had an inoperable tumour.
His son, Martin Daniels, said at the time: "He has said before, 'When it's your time it's your time' and that's how he is trying to face up to things."
As well as McGee, who had been his on-stage assistant, Daniels leaves his three sons from a previous marriage - Martin, Paul and Gary.
Gary Daniels has tweeted a picture of a rabbit in a magician's hat with a tear in its eye, by friend and artist Helen Martin, and wrote: "It is with incredible sadness that I can confirm that Dad, Paul Daniels, passed away overnight."
In addition to his magic, Daniels presented game shows in the 1980s and '90s, including Wipeout, Every Second Counts and Odd One Out.
He also designed special effects for the stage productions of Cats and Phantom Of The Opera, and was commissioned by the English National Ballet to create magical effects for The Nutcracker.
Daniels had continued touring with his magic show and was booked to perform at venues across the UK this year, according to his website, before news of his illness emerged.
He supported a number of charities during his life, taking part in fundraising events and entertaining children at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
A fundraising website has been set up by his family to raise money for charities, including a brain tumour charity and the Royal Berks charity, based at the Reading hospital which treated Daniels.
'Outstanding showman'
The Magic Circle said Daniels had "been an inspiration to many magicians" and is of "legendary status" in the world of magic.
In a statement, it said: "At the height of his career The Paul Daniels Magic Show on BBC One pulled more than 20 million viewers - that was more than one third of the British population regularly tuning in on a Saturday night to watch a magician make them laugh and witness feats of wonder such as his famous Chop Cup routine.
"In this day and age of fragmented media platforms, no other magician is likely to be able to achieve such a TV ratings record."
It added that "the magic world owes Paul a huge debt".
Daniels' nephew James Phelan, also a magician, told the BBC news channel his uncle was a "force of nature" who made it his life's work to "entertain people and make them laugh". He added: "Right up to the last day or two, he's still been doing that."

Mark Linsey, acting director of BBC Television, said: "Paul was an outstanding showman and one of the great entertainers of BBC television.
"His long-running magic show delighted viewers, as did his BBC One quiz shows Odd One Out, Wipeout and Every Second Counts and children's favourite Wizbit."
TV personality Keith Chegwin tweeted: We have lost a lovely, kind and magic man."
Louis Theroux, who filmed a documentary with Daniels and McGee, wrote: "RIP Paul Daniels, a thoughtful skeptic, enemy of hucksterism and paranormal flimflam, and gifted magician."
Uri Geller told BBC Radio 5 live: "Our careers started off by him trying to debunk me and so we had a kind of a row in the early '70s, but then it turned into a very, very close friendship and I'm saddened for his family but that's life, and life must go on."
Ola Jordan, who danced with Daniels when he appeared on Strictly Come Dancing, tweeted that it had been "a pleasure and honour" to work with her "amazing dance partner".

Budget 2016: George Osborne hits back at deficit critics

George Osborne says the UK will be back in the black by 2020 as promised - provided the economy keeps growing.

The chancellor was forced to revise down his growth forecasts and admit he had missed key targets in his Budget.

He blamed global factors - but Labour said his credibility was "completely shot" and said he was cutting taxes for the wealthy at the expense of the poor.

Mr Osborne insisted on BBC Radio 4's Today programme that he was still on course to clear the deficit.

But he added the proviso that it would happen "in normal times when the economy is growing"

Paul Johnson, of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, told Today the chance of Mr Osborne hitting his target was "only about a 50-50 shot" and he would need to impose "proper" tax rises or spending cuts if there was any further downgrade in public finances.

The chancellor also missed his target to get debt falling as a proportion of national income and his self-imposed cap on welfare spending.

Sugar tax

Shadow Chancellor, John McDonnell say think George Osborne's credibility is completely shot. He has missed virtually every one of his targets. People are rightly sceptical that he will now miss his surplus target."

He said Labour would spend more to grow the economy but would have the "additional discipline that you reduce debt as a portion of GDP within the 5 years".

He also criticised Mr Osborne's "morally reprehensible" £1.3bn a year cuts to disability payments under the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) scheme.

He claimed Mr Osborne had "declared war on the disabled" - a charge which the chancellor denied, saying overall spending on disability was increasing and the government was making "sure we help the most vulnerable in our society".

Mr Osborne's headline grabbing announcement of a tax on sugary drinks to combat childhood obesity was welcomed by Labour.

But a Conservative rebellion is brewing over VAT on sanitary products, which is currently charged at 5%, the lowest rate allowable under EU law.

More than 300,000 people have signed a petition calling for sanitary items to be exempted from tax altogether.

In his Budget Mr Osborne said the proceeds of the tax would be distributed among women's organisations.

He has rejected calls from Eurosceptic Conservatives to to defy the EU by unilaterally scrapping the tax, telling the Today programme he expected to get agreement from Brussels on it "in the next few days".

Office for Budget Responsibility chairman Robert Chote told the BBC's Newsnight programme the organisation had not done any projections about the implications of a Brexit - and the chancellor was wrong to imply it had.

A number of economists had said there could be a period of uncertainty which could have implications for financial markets, which the report cited, "but we made no explicit judgement ourselves", he said.

The chancellor has staked his reputation on his economic credibility, even imposing a set of tight fiscal targets on himself. So far he's missed two; cutting debt as a proportion of GDP this year and capping welfare spending.

Now economic analysts warn he could struggle to meet his most coveted - a budget surplus by the end of the Parliament.

Today the Institute for Fiscal Studies will focus on the chancellor's ability to clear the deficit - particularly in light of changing economic forecasts and downward revisions in growth.

Mr Osborne said he was taking difficult decisions to provide long-term stability for the next generation.

He found money to cut income tax and business rates, help savers and invest in roads and schools - but some in the chancellor's own party are questioning his decision to cut disability payments.

And Eurosceptic MPs are threatening to rebel unless the government listens to calls to abolish tax on sanitary products - which is set by the EU.

Revenue from non-oil exports down by 58% to $4.3bn — CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said that the revenue from non-oil exports fell sharply by 58 percent to $4.39 billion in 2015.

Meanwhile, Zenith Bank has expressed its readiness to enhance revenue from non oil exports by assisting its clients with financing support needed export.
CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele disclosed this in Lagos yesterday while speaking at the Zenth Bank International Trade seminar.
While commending Zenith as the highest ranking bank in terms of facilitating non oil export trade, Emefiele called on stakeholders to evolve strategies to address the sharp fall in the nation’s non oil export revenue.

Domestic economy

Represented by the Deputy Director, Trade and Exchange Department,    Mr. Dauda Gotring, said, “ It has been observed that while credit to the non oil sector has been declining and currently at 0.6 percent of total domestic loan to the private sector in the past five years, the credit to the domestic economy has been on the rise.

“The low level of export loan has no doubt contributed to the decline in non oil revenue from $10.53 billion in 2014, $4.39 billion in 2015, which is    a very significant drop

“The impact of this on the country’s export potentials is quite significant and has become topic for stakeholders’ dialogue towards evolving responsive strategies that will expand resources for exports expanding programmes on a complimentary basis.”

Commending Zenith Bank for organising the seminar, he said the seminar will help in identifying the various issues hampering the non oil export    in the country. He said, “It is my hope that the outcome    of this stakeholders deliberation will assist CBN to formulate policies geared towards enhancing growth of non-oil exports

“It is expected that resolutions    of this seminar will lead to increased receipt of foreign exchange from non oil exports and job creation among others”.

In his opening address, Managing Director/Chief Executive, Zenith Bank Plc, Mr. Peter Amangbo, said that Zenith Bank has made it a top priority to enhance the ability of its clients to export.

He said, “The goal of this year’s Zenith Bank International Trade Seminar is to escalate the tone of the conversation around non oil exports. Apart from this interactive seminar series, as a bank, we have decided to make it a top priority to improve the conditions that directly affect the ability of our clients to export, such as monetary easing, by assisting with financing that is needed for exports, trade advocacy and export promotion effort, educating our clients about markets and the financing opportunities available.”

Ex-Gov Peter Obi to reconcile P-Square

LAGOS—Ex-Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has resolved to wade into the crisis rocking the P-Square brothers.

It was gathered that Obi was highly ‘disappointed’ with the two brothers and called them separately on Monday to advise them against making a decision that will ruin their career.

According to the source, “There’s still hope for them to remain together. The former governor called both of them separately on Monday, including their elder brother Jude and advised them not to allow outsiders come between them. He reminded them of the old African adage that says, blood is thicker than water,” the source said.

Corruption, obstacle to economic growth — Sagay

Prof. Itse Sagay, Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption says corruption is an obstacle to economic growth, development of the country.

“It is also an obstacle to the eradication of poverty, improved life expectancy and improved livelihood of all Nigerians ‘’.

Sagay said this at the 2nd Public Interest Symposium titled: “How to Fight and Win the War against Corruption; Challenges and Prospects”, at the Island Club, Lagos.

According to him, corruption is the cause of the country`s low human development, as well as responsible for poor policy choices.

He noted that the direct result of this was the execution of white elephant projects, mass unemployment and general misery and wretchedness of the masses.

“Nigeria has been turned into the butt of jokes at the international community, for declaring itself the largest economy in Africa, while harbouring the poorest population in Africa.

“So, we live in this paradox. Nigeria is rich; Nigerians are poor,“ Sagay noted.

He said that President Muhammad Buhari had marked a turning point in the fight against corruption, whereas, previous administrations seemed to be have paid lip service to it.

“The eradication of corruption is a major plank in President Buhari`s camp and as soon as he assumed office, he became the indicator for public conduct in the management of our resources.

“Apart from Buhari`s unimpeachable integrity and known intolerance of corruption, which he has demonstrated since 1983, the various Anti-Corruption Agencies that had earlier had gone to sleep, have suddenly `roared back’ to life.

“We are presently witnessing the dynamism of the EFCC under a new leadership and that of the Code of Conduct Bureau in recent months. The ICPC is also manifesting some resurgence in its activities,’’ he said.

Sagay said that the major weapons established for the war against corruption were the Anti-Corruption Agencies (ACAs), — the ICPC, EFCC, the Code of Conduct Bureau and the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

“However, there are other anti-corruption bodies like the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Bureau of Public Procurement, who are also engaged in combating corruption”.

He said that the fight against corruption were numerous, however, some of these arise from poor standards of investigation and prosecution.

“The prospect of effectiveness in the prosecution can be improved upon by prosecuting any person or persons who have compromised the process, be it a judge, a prosecutor or an investigator.

“By identifying and selecting judges of the highest integrity, who have passion for justice and can never be compromised by financial blandishments, to form the core of judges,’’ he said.

Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Oladipo Okpeseyi SAN and current Chairman of the Island Club said that they floated the public lecture series in order to identify specific areas of interest in the society needing urgent individual and government attention.

He also noted that maiden edition, which was held in September 2015 had a theme, “Nigeria’s War on Terror: How to Fight and Win’’.
The event, which was to start at 1pm on March 16 had to commence later in the day.

Saluting Buhari’s will to conquer terrorism

One can never forget the second bombing incident in Nigeria when a terrorist attempted to bring down the Louis Edet building, the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in the nation’s capital city, Abuja.

FROM LEFT: CHIEF OF AIR STAFF, AIR-            MARSHAL SADIQUE ABUBARKAR; CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF, GEN. ABAYOMI GABRIEL OLONISAKIN; VICE PRESIDENT YEMI OSINBAJO; PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI; CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF, LT-GEN. TUKUR BURATAI AND CHIEF OF NAVAL STAFF, VICE-ADMIRAL IBOK ETE
EKWE IBAS, AT THE DECORATION OF SERVICE CHIEFS AT THE PRESIDENTIAL VILLA IN ABUJA ON THURSDAY (13/8/15). NAN

This was to be the first suicide mission in Nigeria and a new dimension in the activities of the terror group that now calls itself Wilāyat Gharb Ifrīqīyyah aka Boko Haram in its deadly operations in Nigeria.

This incident opened the door for our country’s descent into despondency and a long running show of shame. It exposed Nigeria’s numerous weaknesses to the world as the other security agencies were forced to build siege walls with artificial barriers like blocks, stones and other instruments to barricade their complexes.

Each security outfit became wary and were willing to do the ridiculous if only to avoid any embarrassment from Boko Haram and their suicide bombers.

If the siege mentality in the nation’s capital was troubling then the news from the war front in the north east, the Boko Haram heartland was dismal.

There were countless number of stories of soldiers fleeing battles, widespread deserting, horrendous casualty and a band of terrorists that took on invincibility. The situation was bad enough that constitutionally scheduled general elections were placed on hold for six week under the guise of fighting a group that had grown the capacity to attack any part of the country at will.

The coming of President Muhammadu Buhari, the product of the shifted elections, marked the beginning of the end of Boko Haram. The inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari and subsequent appointment of Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai remains that turning point in the war against the fanatical murderers.

It marked the point when the commanders of the extremists, who decorated themselves without the sophistication and training of the Nigerian Army that was proudly rated as the best in Africa sequel to the evil ascendancy of Boko Haram being addressed as mere criminals.

One can therefore not be blamed to have found the declaration by the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, six months after the inception of the administration, that Boko Haram has been technically defeated. The Minister of Information who was hitherto known for his persistent outspokenness during his days as the All Progressives Congress, APC spokesman demonstrated what he meant with a visit to Maiduguri, which until the exit of the former administration of President Goodluck Jonathan was the administrative headquarters of Boko Haram just like Washington DC is to the United States of America.

Senior officials of the previous administration had technically declared the north-east a no go area, even for those who are originally from the place. It was adequately reported, quoting multiple intelligence sources and operational reports, that the terrorists were all coordinated from this town while Sambisa Forest served as their armoury and Bite as the spiritual headquarters from where all their Imams and Alfas coordinating prayers for their success against our Army.

Ironically, mere prayer warriors can only win battles when there is no army like the renewed Nigerian Army under President Buhari and his able Service Chiefs, officers and soldiers have made us to understand today.

Just as the Boko Haram black flags have been taken down and burnt in areas that were once their strongholds, making it possible for life to return to normal, the siege around military facilities and other national assets in Abuja is being lifted.

The barricades have disappeared from Agura Hotel and other barricades are disappearing from around other facilities. Institutions that still have barricades in place either have exceptionally cowardly disposition or they are not in tune with the mood of the times.

Those days when we hear the then Minister of Information, Labara Maku of the Jonathan administration declare the defeat of Boko Haram, Nigerians run to Agura hotel to confirm if the double lane, which was sealed off to protect military offices in the vicinity, has been reopened to traffic or not.

It is on this note that must appreciate President Buhari’s right choice in appointing Ge
