N1.4trn fine: Why MTN may not make full payment —NASS
The House of Representatives said, yesterday, that MTN Nigeria may not be made to make full payment of the total N1.4 trillion fine imposed on it by the Nigerian Communications Commission.
Deputy Chairman, House Committee on ICT, Alhaji Ahmed Bichi, disclosed this, yesterday, at the 2016 edition of the Nigerian Internet Governance Forum, NIGF, holding in Abuja.
He said consultations were ongoing between a committee set up by the House and ministry representatives on the matter, adding that the outcome of the committees would be made the public on conclusion of their deliberations.
He stated that the joint committee members of the House had resolved to hasten the process to ensure quick resolution of the matter in the interest of the nation and all parties concerned, stating that the company might after all not be subjected to make full payment of the fine.
“Consultations are going on between a committee set up by us and people from Ministry of Communications and I will be constrained to say anything on it now.
“They are looking into it and they are going to talk with the company, that is MTN, as soon they finish their consultations.
“I think in the next few weeks, we should be able to tell Nigerians the update. Let me tell you that the update would be favourable to Nigeria. No, the fine had not been waved completely. They will pay the money, but it may not be the exact thing,” he added.
On the NIGF event, the law maker said the House had resolved to support all well meaning policies on Internet through legislative procedures.
According to him, a proposal has already been made on the 2016 Data Protection Bill for speedy passage into law.
